How to Locate a Baptism Record in Church Archives

Before civil registration, churches recorded many key life events. Here’s how I found a baptism record for a 19th-century ancestor in a diocesan archive. Many of these records are available on Ancestry.com.

Step-by-step:

  1. Identify the church or parish where the event likely occurred.
  2. Contact the church office or diocesan archive for access instructions.
  3. Search baptism indexes (if available) by surname.
  4. Review the register entry for parents’ names and sponsors.
  5. Make a copy or transcription for your records.

Tip: Sponsors and witnesses can be important relatives worth adding to your research.
