How to Locate a Baptism Record in Church Archives
Before civil registration, churches recorded many key life events. Here’s how I found a baptism record for a 19th-century ancestor in a diocesan archive. Many of these records are available on Ancestry.com.

Step-by-step:
- Identify the church or parish where the event likely occurred.
- Contact the church office or diocesan archive for access instructions.
- Search baptism indexes (if available) by surname.
- Review the register entry for parents’ names and sponsors.
- Make a copy or transcription for your records.
Tip: Sponsors and witnesses can be important relatives worth adding to your research.
